THE OUTSPOKEN Ashanti Regional youth organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Boahen, is in deep waters for making defamatory remarks about the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Opoku Adusei. The GMA president has threatened to haul the NDC organizer to court for justice soon because he is of the conviction that a statement made by Boahen on Kessben FM in Kumasi last Saturday had defamed him. Mr. Boahen accused Dr. Adusei of being the cause of the ascendancy in the reported cases of maternal mortality in the Ashanti region in recent times. The NDC youth organizer insisted that instead of concentrating on his work of helping to save precious lives in the hospital, Dr. Adusei, who is the President of the GMA, was rather scheming with NPP top guns about how to frustrate the NDC administration. According to him, with the exception of the Ashanti region, maternal mortality cases had reduced in the country, insisting that doctors in the region had been influenced by Dr. Adusei not to work and this had caused the increase in maternal mortality cases in the area. Mr. Boahen claimed that Dr. Adusei had continually planned with NPP functionaries in the region about how he would use his position as GMA president to influence medical doctors to embark on strike just to discredit the NDC administration. The NDC organizer alleged further that he had personally seen Dr. Adusei in serious discussions with a section of the NPP hierarchy in the region at the Yegoala Hotel where they were planning about what they could do to bring the NDC government down. In the course of the programme, Dr. Adusei was called by the programme�s host to clear his name in the wild allegations leveled against him. Dr. Adusei said there was no truth in the allegations against him, threatening to drag the NDC organizer to court. �I am requesting an official copy of the tape on which he made the allegations about me from the Kessben FM programmes manager, I will take the matter to court,� Dr. Adusei threatened. The GMA president noted that he was not a member of any political party in the country, disclosing that he started working as a medical doctor in 1985 when both the NPP and NDC were not formed. Dr Adusei, who is the medical director of Suntreso hospital, explained the laws of Ghana did not prevent any medical doctor from joining any political party provided that individual would not allow his political affiliation to influence his/her work as a doctor. He stated emphatically that he was politically neutral.
