Ghana would on Monday November 12, play host to a two-day annual conference dubbed: WAICA Accra 2012 aimed at encouraging exchange of business among member insurance companies within West Africa. The conference is also to encourage the development of the insurance market in each member country on sound and technical basis and to work with governments, ministries and supervisory agencies with the aim of developing the insurance industry. The member countries include Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Speaking to journalists in Accra yesterday ahead of the conference, Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), Frank Oppong Yeboah, said the conference would encourage the exchange of information, data and experience among member companies. Mr Yeboah said: It would encourage the promotion of insurance education in each country and to encourage existing educational institutions such as universities to initiate courses and training programmes on insurance and allied subjects as well as encouraging the exchange of business and personnel from company to company. The conference would be on the theme: Harnessing the effects of Foreign Direct Investments for the Development of the Insurance Industry in West Africa. It is being organised by the Ghana Insurance Association in collaboration with WAICA, NIC and Ghana Insurance Brokers Association. WAICA was formed in May 1973 to foster collaboration and co-operation among insurance companies in English speaking West Africa countries.
