The next government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will pursue measures towards making Ghana more self-reliant.
Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who declared the intention of the government, said a number of effective plans would be activated to ensure that available and expected internal resources were managed effectively for the development of all sectors of the socio-economic structure.
He said the government would also harness the gains from the oil and gas industry and resources from the other sectors to continue to invest in infrastructure, education, health, water, agriculture, trade and all areas to increase the nation�s productivity.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Adaklu Waya, near Ho in the Volta Region yesterday, as part of his tour o the region, the Vice President noted that such investment would help the nation towards becoming less dependent on foreign aid.
He also gave assurance of prudent management of the economy, indicating that the government would not borrow unnecessarily.
Where the need for foreign support arises, he said the next NDC government would maintain the practice of sensible borrowing to support national development.
�We will borrow appropriately to invest in essential projects that would that would aid our economic progress and secure a better future for the generations to come.
�We will not borrow to spend on unproductive things like others did and still plan to do,� he said.
According to him, borrowing to consume and not investing to be able to repay and accrue profits, is not good since it places a strain on the economy.
He said the NDC will ensure the continuous equitable distribution of development.
As a social democratic party, he said, the NDC believes that �the resources of State must be used to help everybody, and not a privileged few,� he said.
He was optimistic that the economy would continue to improve judging from the economic gains being realised from the prudent measures instituted by the government since 2009.
The Vice President assured the chiefs and people of Adaklu of more development projects saying �the best is yet to come to Adaklu and the Volta Region.�
He thanked the people of the area for keeping faith with the NDC, assuring them that they would not regret.
