Ashtown Violence: Shooting Incident Not Politically Motivated - Police

The Ashanti Regional Police command has revealed that the gunshots fired at the New Patriotic Partys (NPP) Parliamentary candidate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and his supporters at Ashtown in Kumasi on Thursday, were not politically motivated. This particular incident is not a political issue. It is purely a criminal act and that is how we are going to treat it. Several casualties were recorded after a fracas broke out between members of the New Patriotic Party and a yet-to-be- identified man believed to be a member of the opposition National Democratic Party. At a press briefing on Friday however, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyenin said efforts to reach Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his side of the story has proved futile. We have tried since morning to get Dr. Opoku Prempeh to at least come and tell us his version but we are yet to get him. I was forced to delay you because we wanted all of them to tell us what happened. We did not want to come out with just one version of the incident. He continued, Ashanti Region has been very calm during this electioneering campaign and I congratulate everybody in Ashanti for that... I will plead with all of you and all those who are putting political strands on it to stop. DCOP Gyenin appealed to individuals who were at the scene of the incident to help with the Police complete investigations on the matter. He cautioned the general public to desist from making speculations about the incident.
