Teacher In Trouble For Cutting Student Hair

A Cape Coast Circuit Court, presided over by Florence Kai Otoo on Friday granted bail in the sum of GH5,000 with one surety each to a Housemistress at the Ghana National Senior High School (SHS), Whilemena Sam and a house three dormitory prefect, Rabiatu Haruna. The two, who were charged for causing harm and abetment of crime, pleaded not guilty. They are expected to re-appear on December 18, 2012. Prosecuting, Inspector Christiana Sampong said the complainant in the case Victoria Palm is a third year student in the school. Inspector Sampong said on September 17, 2012 at about 10:30 pm, Victoria went downstairs to collect cloths she hanged on the dry line. Prosecution further stated that Victoria, who was in the company of her two friends, met Mrs Sam, who was in the house to observe light out. Inspector Sampong said Mrs Sam asked the victim and her friends why they were loitering around at that particular time. Prosecution hinted that the victim tried to explain, but the housemistress rebuked her and described her as disrespectful. Inspector Sampong added that the tutor immediately pulled the victims hair and accused her of maintaining bushy hair, a situation which compelled the housemistress to order Perpetual Amatefio and Rabiatu, who were at the scene, to get her a blade and pair of scissors to cut the victims hair. Prosecution added that Perpetual gave the blade to the housemistress who handed it over to Rabiatu, stressing that the teacher instructed her to disfigure the hair resulting in a deep cut on the victims head. Inspector Sampong said the angry housemistress collected the victims hair, placed it in her handbag and left the scene. Prosecution stated that on December 18, 2012, the housemistress led the victim to a house outside campus and hired the services of a barber to cut the rest of the hair, adding that she placed the hair in her handbag and left. The persecutor hinted that the victim, who was not happy about the action of the tutor, reported the matter to the police. Inspector Sampong noted that upon investigations, the two were arrested and arraigned before court.
