The Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) has called for a national policy on education that insulates education from undue political interference. Furthermore, it says an educational commission should urgently be established to define an appropriate educational philosophy for the country. In a communiqu� issued in Wa during its 19th annual conference and workshop on the theme, �Sustaining Peace, Unity and National Development through Quality Education Delivery�, CODE said it recognised and appreciated all efforts made by the government to bring access to quality education to all Ghanaian children of school age. It said quality education required the provision of adequate financial and logistical resources, as well as the supply of strong and robust vehicles at the right time to enhance efficient and effective monitoring and supervision of schools. It said the relevance of the best teacher/worker awards could not be over-emphasised and it noted with pride the continuous enhancement of the national awards. CODE was, however, of the view that some seed money be provided for the expansion of those awards at the regions and the districts. It also said to enable children to grow up to appreciate the need for peace and unity among us, a new curriculum that taught the historical background and told the truth about ourselves be urgently developed. The statement further urged the government to pursue a vigorous programme of action that promoted national unity through a conscious regional and ethnic integration of students at all levels across the country. It finally said the proposed policy of special allowances to teachers in deprived areas and the provision of accommodation for all teachers should be implemented without further delay.
