The youth of La have warned the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo popularly called Lion, to desist from encouraging the chief and people of Katamanso to encroach lands belonging to the La stool.
According to them if the minister did not stop influencing the Lands Commission to register large tracts of La lands in the name of Katamanso, they would take the law into their own hands and make sure they protect their lands for the present and future generations.
�The need to protect our lands might have unintended consequences,� they warned.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Justice Anum, secretary of the La Youth said even though La did not share any boundary with Katamanso, the chiefs and people of the area were encroaching on La Stool lands with impunity.
He said in a High Court judgment titled Nii Odai Ayiku IV vrs Nii Laryea Akuetteh VIII delivered on May 19, 1980, it was ruled that Katamanso was a village within Nungua and had no land of its own, adding that �In spite of this clear pronouncement, Katamanso has been overrating itself.�
Therefore, he said, for Katamanso to continue to act as if it has any land of its own was clearly calling the bluff of not only La but the Nungua Stool which it shared boundary with, as it has been properly documented in the Gold Coast Survey Map of Accra in 1947.
Mr. Anum accused the chiefs and people of Katamanso of hiring land guards, who are causing them a lot of havoc, offering protection to estate developers to grade and bulldoze large tracts of their lands in the full glare of the police and the authorities.
He stated that, �The complicity of the police and therefore the political elite in the daylight robbery of La lands cannot be overemphasized.�
Mr. Anum therefore called on the chiefs and people of Katamanso to respect their long established boundaries and stop encroaching on lands belonging to the La Stool or face consequences.
