Ghana Decides Today: Who Will It Be?

The day is finally here! Who will victory be knocking on his door? Today, over 14 million Ghanaians across the country will be voting for a presidential and parliamentary candidate of their choice. The faith and destiny of eight presidential aspirants namely: John Dramani Mahama, National Democratic Congress (NDC); Dr. Daniel Lartey, Great Consolidated Peoples Party (GCPP); Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, New Patriotic Party (NPP); Hassan Ayariga, Peoples National Convention (PNC); Dr. Abu Sakara, Convention Peoples Party (CPP); Kwesi Addae, United Front Party (UFP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Progressive Peoples Party (PPP); an Independent Candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah as well as 275 parliamentary aspirants lie on the thumb of the electorates in Ghana. Results of various political analyst and opinion polls have tipped NDC candidate, President John Dramani Mahama or Nana Akufo Addo of the NPP to win. However, the other aspirants are also confident of changing the trend; rising to the top no matter what opinion polls says. From all indications this years election which is the sixth to be conducted under the Fourth Republican Constitution will be a keenly contested one. As at Thursday evening, queues had already started forming at various polling stations all over the country with anxious voters waiting for the electoral process to begin. The election in 2008, saw former President John Evans Atta Mills (late) of the NDC obtaining 4,056,634, representing 47.92% and Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP: 4,159,439 of the total valid votes cast representing 49.13%. Dr Nduom then flag bearer of the CPP had 113,484 representing 1.34% with Dr Edward Mahama of the PNC obtaining 73,494 of the votes which represented 0.87% of the total valid votes. The rest of the votes went to the DFP, DPP and an independent candidate. The NDC considerably overtook the NPP in the run-off by obtaining 4,521,032 representing 50.23% and the NPP had 4,480,446 representing 49.77% of the total valid votes cast. Hopefully the outcome of todays election will enhance the democratic credentials of this country; placing it on a different pedestal in Worldwide. So once again the question is who will it be? Is your guess as good as mine? Time will surely tell.
