Ho Removes NPP Posters

Barely 10 hours after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared John Daramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as President-elect all flags, posters, bill boards and banners of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have conspicuously disappeared in Ho and other parts of the Volta region. Some people defaced, destroyed and removed all paraphernalia of the NPP pasted in the regional capital. The act was carried out by supporters of the NDC who jubilated over the victory of their party and President John Mahama in the election. The NDC supporters tore NPP posters on walls, broke down bill boards, removed flags and banners amidst wild jubilations last Sunday night. It is not clear if their action was sanctioned by some party leaders of the victorious NDC, who consider the Volta Region as their World Bank or just mere over jubilation. That notwithstanding, the act seemed very coordinated as posters of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, which were mounted at vantage points in the regional capital could not be traced. Apart from the act, which has been described by some political analysts as intolerant, there were other wild jubilations across the region. Some eyewitnesses, who spoke to Daily Guide, wondered why the security agencies that were scattered in the capital remain unconcerned while the NDC supporters indulged in such unlawful act which could provoke a reaction. Ho, which was quiet, went gay after the declaration with residents clad in NDC paraphernalia jubilating amidst chants, dance and reckless riding. Taxi drivers branded their taxis in NDC colours and echoed their horns as they sped through town. Others were seen carrying coffins claiming they were going to bury the elephant the symbol of the NPP while others were clad in school uniforms and carried chop boxes, mattresses and trunks amidst shouts of Free SHS to mock the opposition NPP. They also chanted the borrowed mantra of telecommunications giant, MTN e dey bee keke, eye zu..eye za, one touch, among others. Supporters gathered at Mirage Pub in the VORDEP Village Area and awaited the declaration by the EC. Many people, including both old and young, participated in the celebrations. They moved onto the streets and caused heavy human and vehicular traffic. In Ho, the sensational Zibo group, the local jama group, took charge of the streets, as other borborbor and jama groups performed throughout the night. Many drinking bars and food vendors also made profit. The Deputy Organizer of the NPP, Enock Amegbletor described the act as unfortunate and condemned it, saying Such acts of provocation will not intimidate us in anyway. We are not perturbed, but we call on the security agencies to be firm and ensure that the level of insanity is contained beyond degeneration. The NDC General Secretary of the NDC, Simon Amegashie Viglo, noted that the partys attention had not been drawn to the incident and so he could not comment on it.
