President John Dramani Mahama has affirmed government�s decision to throw its weight behind the candidature of Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade, Industry and Regional Integration, for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
President Mahama gave the assurance when he addressed the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Heads of State and Governments (ACP) summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, today.
He, therefore, called on all the 79 member states of the ACP to join Ghana in supporting Mr Kyerematen to secure the position.
It will be recalled that the decision to support Mr. Kyerematen was taken by the late President John Evans Atta Mills during the African Union (AU) summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in January 2012.
Commenting on the subject after the meeting, President Mahama gave the assurance that the Government of Ghana would use its leverage within the committee of Nations to garner support for Mr Kyerematen�s bid.
He said the signs were good because Ghana had already secured the support and endorsement of the entire membership of the African Union to rally behind its candidate.
President Mahama expressed the hope that through negotiations and dialogue other countries including members of the ACP would accordingly go along with Ghana's position.
Political observers have described the move as a confidence builder in Ghana's democratic dispensation noting that the decision to support the former Minister goes further to demonstrate the high level of tolerance and maturity within the Ghanaian political system.
