Woman, Son Murdered In Bizarre Circumstances

The Tema Police are investigating the bizarre murder of a 35-year-old nursing mother and her three day old baby in separate incidents, at Tema New Town. The bodies of Eunice Dede Mensah and her son, Kwesi Acquaye, were identified by the Police last week. Eunice was found almost naked, in a supine position with fresh lacerations on her face, after the body was washed ashore, at Tema New Town, on February 8. The body of Acquaye was found in her room at U-Compound on February 6, after two unidentified men in masks attempted to stab Eunice in the throat and kill her. According to the Police, the boy might have died during the struggle between the thugs and her mother. Eunice was rushed to the Tema General Hospital and referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment, and discharged. It however remains a puzzle how her body was washed ashore two days later as the police said they suspected foul play. Narrating the sad incident to the Ghanaian Times yesterday, the Tema New Town District Police Commander, ASP Herbert Sosu, said police were in the process of investigating both incidents. ASP Sosu said on February 6, at 8am, the father of the woman Mensah Quarshie of house number SE Awudum in Tema Newtown, accompanied by Ernest Acquaye and the assemblyman of Dade Agbo electoral area, Kojogah Dakagbe reported to the police that her daughter, Eunice Dede Mensah, was attacked and stabbed by two unidentified men wearing masks at around 4am while sleeping in her room. The room had not been secured making it easy for the attackers to enter. During the incident her three day old son allegedly died and her assailants managed to steal GH100 from her handbag. The woman was rushed to the Tema General Hospital but she was referred to the Korle u Teaching Hospital but she was referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment. ASP Sosu said investigators were quickly dispatched to the house. On entering the room they saw the dead baby on the bed with the room completely disorganized and traces of blood on the floor. He said the investigators subsequently went to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to see how she was responding to treatment and after she was discharged they escorted her to the Tema New town Police Station to take her statement before entrusting her in the care of her parents. ASP Sosu said however on February 8 at about 6:30am information reached the police that a female adult has drowned in the sea and has been washed ashore. He said police rushed to the beach to verify the information only to realize that it was the body of Eunice Dede Mensah.
