The Chief and people of Vea in the Upper East Region are suing the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police over what they describe as the desecration of their shrine.
Residents of Vea have clashed with the Police after contractors working on a dam for the area attempted blast rocks for the construction.
The residents claim the rocks serve as their shrines.
A protest by the people of Vea led to the shooting and killing of a university student during one of the demonstrations.
The writ, which was filed at the High Court is seeking among other things, to declare the conduct of the contractor and the other defendants as acts of trespassing.
Lawyer for the Chief of Vea, John Ndebugre in an interview with Citi News noted: �We are basically asking for a declaration of title to the land on which the rocks are situated and consequently a declaration that the rocks is a shrine. A declaration that an attempt to disturb the rocks by way of blasting will constitute the infringement of the fundamental rights of the people of Vea.
According to Lawyer Ndebugre, the people of Vea have not been duly compensated; even if the government were to take it [the land] for development purposes.
