Construction of New Parliament Chamber Will Begin This Year

Finance Minister Seth E. Terkper has told Parliament that due to the number of constituencies added to the already existing ones, the chamber has to be expanded to accommodate all legislators. He said there would be a need for a new parliament chamber to commence late this year under the Mahama led administration. This was contained in Tuesdays budget statement under the theme; �Sustaining Confidence in the Future of the Ghanaian Economy�‖ �The capacity of the existing chamber cannot accommodate the expanded membership and improvement of standard facilities. In view of this, feasibility studies for the construction of a new parliament chamber will begin this year,� he promised. Presenting the budget, the Finance Minister further said; �Parliament will continue the major projects on job 600 with the view to its completion. The project lineup includes the electronic component of the building, refurbishment and implementation of a e-parliament system� According to Seth Terkper, Parliament will complete the establishment of a Fiscal Analysis Office (FAO) to provide in house capacity on fiscal, financial and budget analysis and will also support the work of Parliament across its legislative, representation and oversight functions.
