IMANI Boss: Urban Water Delivery Is Poorly Managed; Should Be Privatised

Executive Director Imani Center for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe has stated that the water sector and its urban water delivery is so poorly managed in the country to the extent that the authority responsible for handling the water supply lamented that about 50% of the water produced get lost through unaccountable loss. He explained that there are people who are interested in handling the water sector but it is incumbent on the government to package the sector well to attract the needed people to the sector; in that the government should privatize the water sector to the deserving investor to deliver on the water supply. Speaking on Okay FM on Saturday, he stressed that serious money has to be pushed into the sector to make it run properly; in that Ghanaians are willing to pay for quality service and with the lay back attitude of the authority to deliver, Ghanaians will be forced to access water through illegal means. He reiterated that; we want water, give it to us; if you cant give it to us, then get out of the way. He therefore stated that Ghanaians are tired of the anthem that there are infrastructure deficit; in that $ 1.5 billion is needed to deliver the quality service, adding that the authority has to work harder to do something about this water crises. To the Imani Boss, it is time for government to lay down their tools for private investors to come in to continue the delivery service; adding that the privatization should not be given to friends but serious investors who can deliver. He hinted that it has been a worrying trend to notice that all the government institutions like TOR and Ghana Airways have suffered managerial crises including the energy and water sectors. He again said that it is time government departments and agencies pay their bills; in that unless government pay those bills the private investors will find it difficult to handle and manage the sectors very well. According to the GWCL report, the problem with the water sector has been attributed to some defects in the four filters at the Weija treatment plant and a breakdown in equipment of the water company. Franklin Cudjoe added that since independence, the country has not been able to manage its own affairs; adding that the attitude of Ghanaian leaders have brought the various sectors to their current bad states.
