Help demystify the study of mathematics in schools - Prof Dontwi

Professor Isaac Kwame Dontwi, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has urged mathematics teachers to be more innovative and work hard to demystify the teaching and learning of the subject in schools. They need to assist students to develop love for mathematics since it is the foundation to the socio-economic development of the nation. Prof Dontwi, who is also the Dean of the University�s Institute of Distance Learning, was speaking at the opening of the fourth annual congress of the Ghana Mathematics Society at the Teachers Hall in Kumasi. The three-day meeting is under the theme, �Using ICT to promote mathematics for national education and development�. It has brought together mathematics teachers, mathematics volunteers, students and other stakeholders into the study of ICT and mathematics. They are discussing issues relating to its teaching and learning as well as its application at all levels of the educational system. Prof Dontwi said he was aware of the various challenges facing the teaching and learning of the subject but called for research to develop competencies to transform the system. Prof Sitsofe E. Anku, President of the Society, urged the participants to be proactive and embark on professional programmes to improve on their performance. The Reverend Dr William Obeng-Denteh, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Society, said the society would to everything to encourage the use of ICT to promote mathematics.
