The Gyan family, over the weekend, buried the mother of Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan and held a talk-of-town funeral that brought traffic to a halt in both the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions. The funeral attracted a record crowd and big names from politics, through sports to entertainment, as well as thousands of people from all walks of life who were wailing perhaps more than the bereaved. The tall list of distinguished personalities that turned up to mourn with the Gyan family included New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for 2012, Nana Akufo-Addo, Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, soccer legend Sammy Osei Kufour, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi, Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah with his assistant Maxwel Konadu, Chief Executive of the Ghana Movie Award Fred Nuamah, actor Agya Koo and an unending list of notables. Moments after the official thanksgiving at Gbawe on Sunday, Asamoah Gyan expressed gratitude for the love Ghanaians showed his family all through the funeral. According to Baby Jet, though the family would officially issue a statement of appreciation, he could not hold back his gratitude. The Black Stars Captain arrived in Ghana Thursday for the burial and funeral activities. My mother was my everything and I see her death as the greatest loss that has happened to me. When I started playing football she was a great inspiration and even before her death, she played a huge role in my investments. I cant quantify the loss and I call on all Ghanaians to help me in giving her a befitting burial, Baby Jet told journalists when he touched down at the Kotoka International Airport. Asamoah Gyan explained that although he flew to Ghana from United Arabs Emirates because of the mothers funeral, he was also in the country to help Ghana win its World Cup qualifying match against Sudan on the Sunday 29th March.
