TEWU To Embark On Strike..Govt Has Taken Us For Granted For Too Long

Despite meeting with government last Sunday to address their grievances, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) have hinted of a strike action after their meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 20th march 2013. TEWU has decided to join their colleagues; National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) who are on strike over discrepancies in the conditions of service. According to them, though they have met with government, nothing new has been brought to the table with respect to their salaries, adding government is taking them for granted. Mr. Peter Lumor, the National Chairman of TEWU who spoke to Hello FM's Krokrokoo host King Edward, noted they will be meeting tomorrow to determine whether they will be joining the strike fray or not. The government has taken us for granted for too long and if we do not send a word of caution to them, we will not be recognized and our grievances will equally not be met, he stressed. Touching on some rumors making rounds that TEWU members will be used to invigilate the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), he denied and warned all TEWU members to stay away from the exercise adding that the organization will not be held responsible for any malpractices if they are allowed to invigilate the exams. We are following the same cause of both NAGRAT and GNAT; why will our members even accept to go and invigilate on behalf of the striking teachers, he asked he queried.
