Ghanaian Students Stranded In London

Students of the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom (UK), on GETfund scholarship are said to be in a difficult situation following an unpaid tuition and accommodation fees. Last year, government through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) sponsored some students to various institutions in China, Turkey, Russia, United Kingdom and other countries to study Medicine, Oil and Gas and other related courses. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, transportation and general upkeep. However, speaking to Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Peace FMs morning show, 'Kokrokoo' President of the University of Bradford Students Association (UBSA) in Bradford, UK, Mr. Ambrose Amenhyia said the authorities of the University have threatened to cut short their course if government does not pay their tuition fees. According to the school authorities, they sent a request for the payment of tuition fee but GETfund pleaded for more time. The school agreed to give us and GETfund up to the end of the month; March to pay the tuition fees, or they will suspend our account; meaning we cannot use any facility in school - but as at now, we have not heard anything from GETfund. Mr. Amenhyia also indicated that each student is given 800 monthly to cater for rent, food, transportation and many more; however, we have not received the money and it is making life really difficult for us. According to him, when they started with their course in the UK, some of the students were given 2000 as part payment of their allowances, hoping that the rest will be paid; some didnt even get their money at all. This is affecting us and if they dont help us their intention for this scholarship will not be met. We are really in crisis; we are even finding it difficult to eat.
