Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),Samuel Awuku has warned the Electoral Commission (EC) not to use the fire outbreak at its IT department as an excuse to tamper with evidence pertaining to the ongoing presidential election petition before the Supreme Court. According the EC, apart from the an air conditioner nothing significant was burnt. Fire gutted a section of the IT department of the Electoral Commission last Friday but the fire was quelled by staffs of the office with fire extinguisher before the National Fire Service even arrived at the scene. Sammy Awuku baffled by the unfortunate incident, believes the EC wants to delay hearing because he claimed the IT department is where figures of the December elections are being kept. �The IT department of the EC is where the robbing took place. Of course its figures and that is where they (the EC) keep their figures. Our (NPP) petition to court is based on figures and that is where the EC is playing tricks. The IT department can burn but they must ensure pink sheets are intact in spite of fire,� he warned. Sammy Awuku who was talking on Asempa FM called on the EC to pray for postponement of any disaster at their premises until the court hearing is over. �Even if it�s an electrical cable that will touch, they should pray for postponement, they (the EC) should pray the building doesn�t gut fire because Ghanaians would want to know the outcome of the court ruling and we the NPP with our evidence will fight for this. It should be in the interest of the EC that not even their district, regional or their headquarters will gut fire,� he said He however believes the EC is tampering with evidence and cautioned them to produce all evidence at the next hearing. �The EC is tampering with evidence. They should protect the asset and also hold it as a duty to present all evidence to court. I can�t tell whether the evidences are tampered with or not. But it will be unthinkable for them (EC) to come to court the next time we go to court and raise objections on even their pen,� he added. Sammy Awuku appealed to all NPP members not to worry about the development since "any attempt to temper with the pink sheets will go against the EC".
