Labour Groups Advised To Direct Grievances To National Labour Commission And Not Resort To Strike

The Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, George Smith-Graham, has asked labour groups who feel cheated under the single spine to direct their grievances to the National Labour Commission, NLC, rather than resorting to strikes. He said the groups must have confidence in the NLC which is a legal body mandated to independently arbitrate labour issues for amicable resolution. Mr. Smith-Graham who made these comments on GTV's Current Affairs Programme, 'Talking Point', said the strike by the teachers is unjustified and unwarranted. He therefore called on them to exercise restraint while the committees work to harmonize the levels of category two and three allowances. A labour consultant and CEO of Gamey and Gamey Consultancy, Austin Gamey, said the FWSC is working within rules and regulations and will never disadvantage any group. He said Ghana is a country governed by rule of law and urged striking teachers to follow due processes to resolve their grievances. For his part, the Director of Salaries, Terms and Conditions Department of GNAT, Ahenakwa Quarshie said the Association is not happy with the guidelines being used by the FSWC. He said teachers were better off under the previous Ghana Universal Salaries Structure.
