Volunteering: A Tool For Development

President of the Coalition of Voluntary organization Ghana (COVOG), Pastor Chris Kofi Nyame has asked the youth in the country to be volunteer-oriented. COVOG is an organization which has been in existence since 2006 and it normally engages in advocating or creating a platform for the youth to engage in volunteerism. Speaking in an interview with peacefmonline.com, Pastor Nyame indicated that one must not wait for government to bring about change in their community but engage in volunteerism to solve problems or challenges in the community. According to him volunteerism can bring about development in a nation however it needs policies and strategies from government as well as recognition that there are a lot of benefits from it. He alluded to the fact that because there are no policies in the country for volunteerism, the work of groups like COVOG becomes difficult. However, despite the lack of governments interest, we are not going to be deterred. We will continue to pursue our vision which is to see the country recognizing volunteering as a critical tool for development he stated. Pastor Nyame also stressed that volunteering is not only rendering service without payment but it also develops ones skills and capabilities which can be applied in a job opportunity. It is not a waste of time. He has therefore encouraged the youth to look for a place in their community where they can voluntarily render service to the development of their community.
