Mining Company Sets Up A Development Fund

Perseus Gold Limited, a mining company in the Western Region, has set up a fund to finance development projects in its operating communities as part of its social responsibility. The fund, known as the �Edikan� Trust has so far yielded GHC 1.5m since its establishment one-and-a- half years ago. It would be spent to eradicate poverty, improve health, education and agriculture among others in the affected communities to enhance their living standard. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Nana Prah Agyemsaim VI, said this when the company presented 40 wheel chairs to the Orthopedic Training Centre at Nsawam on Monday. He said the items were donated by Rotary Club of Australia to help the movement of disabled children following an appeal by the centre for assistance. Nana Prah Agyemsaim said for the past-one-and- half years, the company had sponsored 90 young people to pursue technical and vocational training at the Kumasi Technical Institute and had instituted a scholarship scheme for children of the affected farmers in second cycle and tertiary institutions. Receiving the items the Administrator of the Orthopedic Training Centre, Rev Sis Elizabeth Newman, commended the company for the donation. She said there are 50 children and 25 adults on admission at the centre waiting for their artificial limbs.
