UTAG Threatens Strike Action After Easter

University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has hinted that they will be embarking on a strike action on Tuesday, April 2, if government still pays deaf ears to their problems. A statement released by the teachers on Wednesday and signed by the National President of UTAG, Dr. Anthony Simmons, said they will withdraw all teaching services in all public universities to back its demand for immediate payment of all salary arrears owed its members since 2012. Speaking to Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Peace FMs morning show Kokrokoo, Dr. Simmons said they dont understand why government is refusing to pay them the agreed market premium. He said their latest strike action is as a result of failure on governments part to fulfill its promises per previous meetings and agreements as well as communiqu that they have had. We travel in and out for meetings; we have made several phone calls and now we are tired. And so we have given them up to April 2, if nothing is done to resolve the issue, we will put down our tools. If they give us the money, we will go to the classroom; if not, we will advise ourselves he threatened. UTAGs threat to go on a strike action comes on the heels of that of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA). GMA has also threatened to embark on a strike action after the Easter festivities if government fails to fulfill their promise.
