Confusion Rocks NOBISCO

Confusion broke out at the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale last week over the suspension of 979 final year students, by the school authorities for truancy. Some female students are said to have sneaked out of the school during Easter while the males refused to obey school rules, aside littering the dining hall with the food served them. Most of the affected students who were asked to go home refused to do so and ended up sleeping inside the mosque in the school while others slept in the open space, as the school authorities locked up the dormitories. In an interview with some of the affected students, they condemned the action by the school authorities and urged them to rescind their decision. They said the decision of the school could affect their academic performance since their final examination would begin next week. The students, therefore, appealed to the government to intervene by compelling the school authorities to rescind their decision. The students said the accusations leveled against them by the school authorities were untrue, stressing that none of the girls sneaked out of their dormitories during the Easter festivities. They challenged the authorities to bring out the names of students who sneaked out or broke the schools rules during the period. Meanwhile, some parents who heard of the suspension of the students thronged the school premises in an attempt to plead with the authorities to allow the students to stay on campus and write their final examination. The headmaster of the school, Shaibu Wilberforce Adams could not be reached to comment on the issue. Information available to The Ghanaian Times at the time of filing this story indicated that the school authorities were locked up in a meeting on the issue. NOBISCO is the second SHS to have suspended final year students for misconduct, 24 hours after Kumasi Girls SHS suspended over 400 students who were found guilty of similar offences.
