Five Policemen Arrested For Extortion

The Western Regional Police command has arrested five police officers on accusations of extortion. They were said to have invaded the residence of an expatriate Chinese businessman at Low Cost, a suburb of Tarkwa in the Western region and allegedly extorted GHȻ2,000 from him. The Police Command gave the names of the arrested officers as Lance Corporal Sackey Naah-Korley, Constable Jerotira Everest, Constable Patrick Nimful, Constable Richard Baah and Constable Kweku Assah. Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olivia Adiku told Graphic Online that the policemen, dressed in uniform, fully armed and led by L/C Sackey Naah-Korley invaded the residence of Dai Ming Sheng, the Chinese businessman on Sunday at about 9pm. A civilian accomplice only identified as Richard who is a neighbor of Dai Ming Sheng was said to have accompanied the men. When they entered the residence, they allegedly told Sheng and the wife who were then relaxing in their living hall playing video game that they were under arrest. Lance Corporal Naah-Korley was said to have told the victims that he was arresting them for playing video game and that the only remedy was for them to pay GHȻ10,000, else they will have to follow them to the police station. ASP Olivia Adiku said Sheng pleaded with them that he only had GHȻ 2,000 in the house so they agreed to take the GHc2,000 as part-payment. Unknowing to the police officers, their interactions with Sheng was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the house. On Monday, Sheng reported the incident to the police and gave a copy of the recorded tape to them. The five policemen were identified and subsequently arrested. The Regional PRO said an amount of GHȻ1,500 out of the GHȻ 2,000 has since been retrieved from them. The five, she said are currently in police custody at Tarkwa in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.
