GMA Warns Govt: A Disgruntled Doctor Is More Dangerous Than a Striking One

Dr. Frank Serebuo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has warned government not to use force to let the striking doctors go back to work because a disgruntled doctor is more dangerous than a doctor who is on strike. This would not be the last time we would be dealing with government on issues. We will continue to deal with government on issues, so if they think that they can use the law to bulldoze us and force us, they can win the war and live the peace, he fumed. The Medical practitioner made these comments on Adom FM on Thursday in reaction to a suit filed on April 23 by the National Labour Commission (NLC). It is therefore seeking the powers of the court to compel the doctors to call off the strike which it describes as illegal. In their affidavit to support the call for the doctors to call off the strike, the NLC said it has successfully met with all parties and has subsequently reached a Memorandum of Understanding for monies owed the respondent to be paid in installment. The applicant by this writ is therefore praying the court to respect the details of the MOU. This comes as the latest twist to the seemingly unending impasse between the government represented by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the GMA which has resulted in a strike action by the doctors. Dr. Frank Serebuo however believes that every available means of settling the issue must be explored rather than the attempt to force them back into to the theatre rooms.
