NMC: We Are Ready To Investigate The Assault Case

The National Media Commission (NMC) has indicated its preparedness to investigate and settle the assault of some journalists by military personnel on Independence Day. The Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga, advised the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to seek redress at the NMC over the militarys report which exonerated the officers involved. Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, the Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, commended Mr. Ayariga for his suggestion saying we think the ministers suggestion is a very progressive suggestion and we will be very glad if the matter was handled in accordance with the suggestion by the minister. Mr. Sarpong explained that the NMC has been empowered by the constitution to investigate complaints against or by the media, therefore, if the matter was brought before it, that will certainly be squarely within the mandate of the NMC if the parties decided to submit themselves to NMC for resolution. He gave the assurance that the right principles will be applied to resolve the matter. He added since the constitution sought to protect the right of every Ghanaian, the right procedure will be adopted to solve the matter.
