Review Implementation Of Single Spine Pay Policy - Mahama Tells Employment Ministry

We are all witnesses to the remarkable improvement since its implementation. Government as an employer and a custodian of the national interest expects that labour will reciprocate these increases in wages and salaries with higher level of labour productivity; not with strikes and unbridled agitations... These are words of President John Dramani Mahama, speaking at the 2013 May Day celebrations held at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi-Takoradi. According to him, government has done all in its power to ensure that the labour force is paid well through the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS); hence it is incumbent on them (labour) to also work hard for the development of the country. Speaking to the recent strike actions and agitations on the labour front, he however, acknowledged that the implementation of the scheme is facing some challenges but urged workers to cooperate with government in ensuring that those challenges are solved. Indeed there are post implementations challenges and outstanding issues which needs to be addressed; government concedes thisthe issues include market premium, category two and three allowances and the issue article 71 office holders. Government expects nothing less than corporation of workers and organised labour and key actors in the public sector to collectively iron out these remaining challenges he indicated. He also charged the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to facilitate an all-inclusive public forum to thoroughly review the implementation of the single spine pay policy so as to rectify anomalies and defects and improve upon its implementation by the end of May/June this year. It is my expectations that organised labour will work together with us to achieve conscientious solution on this matter he added.
