NDC Did Not Mastermind Amekudze's Application of 'Amicus Curiae Brief'

The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has rejected claims that the NDC masterminded an application for an 'amicus curiae brief', filed by a friend of the Supreme Court, Benoni Tony Amekudze. Why, how could we have sent him? If we were the instigators, we would have defended or supported him...do you think he does not know his rights? He is someone who comes to the court almost every day. When you watch television you see him and when you go there, you see him around, he argued. According to Kofi Adams, what Lawyer Amekudze, who describes himself as a friend of the Supreme Court attempted to do on Thursday is allowed, but unfortunately for him, he did not go about it in the right way because the Supreme Courts rules require that all applications should be supported with an affidavit. The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC said this on Asempa FM after Lawyer Benoni Tony Amekudze sought to draw the attention of the court to a violation of the law in the hearing of the presidential election petition. At the hearing of the petition Thursday morning, Mr. Benoni Tony Amekudze, who introduced himself as a friend of the court argued he wanted to draw the attention of the court to some relevant provisions of the law that were being violated. He insisted that if given the opportunity, he would demonstrate to the court whether or not a sitting President should be sued or joined in a suit as a respondent and that he wanted to draw the Supreme Courts attention to the fact that it was breaking the law. However, Counsel for the petitioners and the respondents unanimously prayed the court to dismiss the application since it was not properly laid before the court. Mr. Amekudzes application was subsequently dismissed on grounds that it was not properly laid before the court.
