GJA Calls For Fresh Probe Into Ennins Death

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says it is not happy with the manner in which the police conducted investigation into the murder of its past chairman, Samuel Ennin. The GJA consequently appealed to the police and all stakeholders to commence fresh investigations into the matter so that the perpetrators would be brought to book. Newly-elected Chairman of the Ashanti GJA, Listowell Yesu Bukarson said, I am calling for fresh investigations into the killing of our past chairman, Mr. Samuel Ennin who was shot dead. Listowell made the call after he was sworn into office by William Boampong, a Circuit Court Judge at a colourful ceremony in Kumasi on Friday. He said the move would go a long way to assure journalists that they could undertake their lawful duties on a daily basis without fear of being killed. Listowell condemned the recent attacks by the military on staff of Graphic and Ghanaian Times in Accra, noting that such wild actions could prevent journalists from effectively working. He said plans were far advanced to institute memorial lectures which would be organized on February 9 each year in memory of the late Samuel Ennin, calling for support from media practitioners. The event was used to swear in all newly-elected executives of the GJA in the region. They include Elizabeth Kankam Boadu, Vice President, Georgina Ama Ankoma, Treasurer and Kingsley Hope, Secretary. Some of the dignitaries, who attended the function, were Ashanti Regional Minister, Eric Opoku and his deputy, Samuel Yaw Adusei and Otumfuos Apagyahene, Nana Owusu Afriyie IV. The GJA chairman expressed dissatisfaction with the behavior of some journalists in public, a development which dented the image of the profession. Listowell said his administration would work to uplift the image of the profession. He gave the assurance that his team would adopt an open-door policy, as well as consider constructive criticisms and advice from all members. He called for total support to achieve his objectives for the GJA. The event, held at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, was also used to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.
