Government reviews security operation for maximum safety

Mr Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Information and Media Relations on Friday stated that government has set out security measures to ensure that Ghanaians enjoy perpetual peace and harmony. He said: �We have reviewed the security situation and observed that it is calm and we are also dealing with issues that will ensure maximum safety in our markets.� Mr Ayariga was briefing the media on the outcome of the emergency security meeting held at the Flagstaff House, Kanda. He said apart from discussing the killings that were recorded in Kumasi and an illegal mining centre near Obuasi, the meeting also made recommendations that would ensure safety at all markets throughout the country. Mr Ayariga said maximum security had been put in place to ward off all kinds of threats and violence in the country, giving the assurance that national security would live up to its bidding in dealing with security issues. He said the security agencies also discussed ways of capacitating the security services to act swiftly on all sensitive issues. �Issues about the Kumasi killings were discussed and I do not want to prejudice the investigations and all I can say for now is, government is tackling all the issues with maximum attention,� Mr Ayariga emphasised. The security briefing was attended by Vice Admiral Matthew Quarshie, Chief of the Defence Staff and Heads of Ghana Navy, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Air force, National Security, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation. Mr Prosper Bani, Chief of Staff and Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, Minister for Interior were also present at the security meeting. Also at the Presidency were; Jeffrey Sachs, Economic Advisor to the President and General Yakubu Gowon, Former Head of State of Nigeria, who held closed door meetings with President Mahama.
