Police Damn "Agents" Over Recruitment Into Service

The Police Administration has expressed concern about reports of fraudsters cheating people under the pretext of recruiting them into the Ghana Police Service. Reports reaching the Police Headquarters in Accra indicate that fraudsters charge between GH1,000 and GH3,000 per person to get them into the service. This, according to DSP Cephas Arthur, Director of Public Relations at the Police Headquarters in Accra, is worrying and therefore there is the need for the public to report such acts for immediate action. He told The Finder in an interview in Accra yesterday that currently five of such cases are pending before court, with another six cases under investigations. Of the total of 29 perpetrators of recruitment fraud, seven are police officers while 22 are civilians, he said. DSP Arthur further stated that when such cases are reported, the perpetrators, be they police officers or civilians, are thoroughly investigated, and when evidence is found against them, they are then prosecuted. He added that the Police Administration would not shield any police personnel cited for recruitment fraud. He explained that the Police Administration has not engaged the services of agents to facilitate the recruitment of people on its behalf. DSP Arthur, however, stated that the police have not yet opened recruitment into the Service. He stated that when recruitment is due, adverts would be placed in the print media and announcement made in the electronic media for the attention of the general public. The Police Administration wishes to inform the public that every effort is being made to deal appropriately with persons who defraud unsuspecting individuals under the pretext of getting them recruited into the Police Service, he said. DSP Arthur called on persons who had fallen victims to these fraudsters to report to the nearest police station for necessary action to be taken.
