A 40 -year old engineer at Kwabenakwa, a suburb of Obuasi, William Kwabena aka Paa Willie, has attempted to commit suicide after his wife had disallowed him to sell the house in which they were living to defray his debts. Kwabena was said to have taken in poison. A source close to the family who spoke to The Mirror explained that Kwabena had worked in both national and international companies as an engineer but had been made redundant for some time now which had made things difficult for him. He has a 14-room house at Kwabenakwa and therefore decided to sell it and use part of the money to defray his debt and invest the rest of the money, to which the wife objected. On May 10, 2013 Kwabena, the source said, went to inform a friend in the area that he would commit suicide because he could no longer bear the problems confronting him. He therefore bought rice and stew from a food vendor in the area, which he went inside his room to eat and just at that time, the friend had gone to inform the family. According to the source, Kwabena went to his room and after he had eaten he also took in the poison. The timely intervention of the family saved him from dying. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and discharged. The family source said the family had agreed to allow him sell the house to avoid any recurrence. As the time of filing this report, The Mirror gathered that no formal complaint had been made to the police.
