Chiefs Asked To Help Stop Pollution

The District Chief Executive for the Wassa East, Mr Anthony Aggrey, has called on the chiefs and people along the Pra River to support the assembly to stop the devastation of the environment by illegal miners. He said their support would help the assembly to protect the river from being polluted by the operators. Mr Aggrey said this at the ordinary meeting of the sixth session of the Wassa East District Assembly, held at Daboase in the Western Region. Mr Aggrey indicated also that the assembly could not function effectively without adequate inflow of funds. He said out of the total internally generated funds received last year, GH39,273.80 was collected at the area council level. This, he said, fell short of the GH75,570.00 target and the nearly GH52,000.00 collected in 2011. Mr Aggrey said the assembly would adopt vigorous cost control measures and revenue improvement strategies to ensure that the assembly was run effectively in the midst of the financial challenges. Accrding to him, data collection on all rateable properties and businesses in the district had begun at Daboase, Ekutuase, Atobiase and Atieku. He said the Department of Feeder Roads had awarded a number of cocoa roads on contract to improve them. The roads include the 10-kilometre Edwenase-Sekyere Obuase road, the Saakye-Sekyere Obuase road, the Atobiase-Sekyere Obuase and the Sekyere Heman-Edwenase Phases 1 and 2. A number of roads have also been earmarked for reshaping. These include the 8.5-km Atobiase-Baase road and the 4.2-km Atobiase-Domama road. He said the assembly had given scholarships to brilliant needy students to ensure that the district produced the needed human resources to accelerate its development. The other interventions, he said, included the supply of school uniforms, furniture, laptops and exercise books to the disadvantaged in the district. In addition, this year, the assembly would complete all ongoing school projects, give assistance to brilliant, needy students and sponsor the Basic Education Certificate Examination mock examination and the Best Teacher Award.
