DOVVSU Investigates Rape Of UCC Medical Student

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service is investigating the case in which a level 200 medical student of the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast was raped by an unidentified man. The victim is, however, declining to give further details about a man she claimed allegedly raped her at knife point when she was relaxing in her hostel last week Saturday. The Central Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, DSP George Appiah-Sekyi disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times on Friday. He declined to go further with details as to what the police gathered during an interaction with the victim. DSP Appiah-Sekyi indicated that it was only the victim who could assist the police to arrest the rapist. He urged the victim not to abandon the case and urged her to collaborate with the police to pursue it to its logical end. He explained that the victim together with a colleague student came to the police station to report the rape case. He said that according to the victim, the rapist upon entering her room which was not knocked took a knife belonging to her and raped her at knife point. A medical report, he said confirmed that the rapist had anal penetration with the victim. A visit to the School of Medical Sciences by the Ghanaian Times on Friday saw some of the students in red hand band demanding the authorities to work towards improving security at their hostels. They had earlier carried out a protest against the rape case involving their colleague. Some of the students echoed the words how can someone rape us in our own hostel? We are not safe. When the Ghanaian Times sought the views of some of the students concerning the alleged rape case, t hey declined, on the grounds that they were not mandated by the University authorities to grant interview to the media
