Kojo Bonsu vows to ensure security in Kumasi

Mr Kojo Bonsu, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has vowed to make the security of the people in the metropolis his number one priority. He said the assembly would collaborate with the security agencies to assure the residents of their safety to enable them to go about their duties without fear or panic. In line with this goal, close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras would be procured and installed within the Central Business District (CBD) and known flashpoints � to be networked to a central security monitoring system. Mr Bonsu, who made this known in his maiden address to the assembly at its ordinary sitting in Kumasi on Tuesday, said the system would be managed by the police and military to effectively monitor the activities of criminals in the metropolis. Additionally, walkie-talkies are to be made available to members of the Metropolitan Security Committee, selected heads of department and heads of the security agencies for efficient communication and coordination of security activities within the metropolis. Metropolitan Guards and Task Force members would also be equipped to support the security agencies in providing security. He spoke of plans to seek assistance from donors, businesses and the international community to procure combat vehicles and other accoutrement to support the police in their operations. Other key activities on his �do list� include the restoration of Kumasi to its status as the �Garden City of West Africa,� through the planting of one million trees within four years and the improvement of environmental sanitation. He said garbage generated within the CBD would now be cleared in the night, and expressed his disgust at the reckless manner some people litter the streets and throw rubbish into waterways and drains and said this would be tackled head-on by establishing Sanitation Courts. The MCE said sports; tourism and education development would receive the needed attention under his watch.
