A Level 100 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi was burnt to death at his family residence at Bakoniaba in Sunyani early last Thursday.
Fire is said to have started in the bedroom of the student, identified as Kwame Koranteng, 22, about 1 a.m. on Thursday, May 23.
His shouts for help attracted the attention of his neighbours to the scene, but because he had locked the door, they could not open it to save him.
According to Chief Inspector Seth Darkey in charge of the Sunyani Municipal Police Command, Koranteng was said to have returned home from school at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.
He said electricity to the uncompleted family residence had been disconnected because of unpaid bills.
Chief Inspector Darkey said when neighbours found it difficult to put out the fire, they called in the Fire Service.
When the fire was eventually put out and the door was opened, Koranteng had been burnt beyond recognition.
The police and the Fire Service could not establish what caused the fire but they suspected that Koranteng might have lit a candle in his room which could have come into contact with combustible materials.
The body has been deposited at the Sunyani Regional Hospital awaiting autopsy, while police investigations are underway.
