People Of Kwashiekuma Appeal For Protection

The people of Kwashiekuma, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region, currently living in fear as a result of continuous landguard attacks, have appealed to the Ministry of Interior for the protection of lives and property. The elders and opinion leaders of Kwashiekuma led by the Acting Head of Kwashiekuman, Ataa Nii Gyeshie, made the call at a press conference at Kwashiekuma on Saturday after the latest attack which occurred on Friday, May 24. They said within a month they have experienced several attacks and the latest on Friday happened when a group of landguards numbering about 100 wielding sophisticated guns, machete, clubs and other dangerous weapons stormed the Kwashiekuma community in several vehicles. Ataa Nii Gyeshie said as he was too old to move to the place where the landguards had converged but he was informed by the youth of Kwashiekuma that the landguards were seen demarcating the 308-acre Kwashiekuma land which is in the courts for arbitration. The Acting Head said since the courts had placed an injunction on the 308-acre land, he was dismayed for the group to take the law into their hands and flout the decision of the courts. He said it was the intervention of the Assemblyman for the area, Nii Mankattah with the assistance of the Amasaman Police that the situation was brought under control before the landguards left the scene. Nii Mankattah, the Assemblyman, said as assembly members their roles are to see to the development of their areas and that the protection of lives and property lie with the Police. He, therefore, called on the Police and the security agencies to pay attention to the distress calls from the area to avert any unfortunate situation. Nii Mankattah also appealed to the feuding parties of the 308-acre land to let peace prevail in the area until the determination of the case in the courts of the land saying I need calmness in my electoral area and no one should step on the said land until judgement is given.
