60-Year-Old Driver Kills Wife

A misunderstanding between a 60-year-old driver of La in Accra and his wife turned violent when the woman was allegedly beaten to death by the man. The deceased, Faustina Lamiokor Tawiah, a 58-year-old trader, was said to have collapsed and rushed to the La General Hospital for treatment but died shortly after admission. The suspect, Sowah Commey, has been arrested and is assisting the La Police in their investigations. According to a daughter of the deceased, Mrs Victoria Asamoah, who visited the offices of the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, her mother and her stepfather had been living together at La for some years now. She said for some time now her mother had been complaining about the treatment meted out to her by her husband, who beat her up anytime they had an argument. She said about 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, she had a call from her aunt that Commey had brought Tawiah to her (the aunts) house in a taxi. Mrs Asamoah said according to the information she received, in the taxi Tawiah was sandwiched between two men and was foaming from the mouth, with blood oozing from her nostrils. She said when her aunt asked the two men why they did not send the obviously unconscious woman straight to hospital, Commey explained that he wanted a family member to accompany them to the hospital. According to Mrs Asamoah, the suspect explained that there had been a slight misunderstanding between him and Tawiah, after which he left the wife in the room and went out for some hours. But on his return he found her unconscious on the floor foaming from the mouth and so he decided to report to the family first before sending her to hospital. The aunt then accompanied the suspect and his friends to the hospital, and while the doctors were trying to revive Tawiah, she died without uttering a word. Mrs Asamoah said according to the residents, they heard the couple arguing and then later the deceased screamed for help. Based on that information, a report was made to the La Police and Commey was arrested. When contacted, the La Police confirmed that the case had been reported and that investigations had already begun.
