Two traders alleged to be dealing in fake currency have been arrested by the police at Adentan, near Accra. Kwesi Sarpong, 29, and Kweku Akosah, 23, were apprehended at Pantang on Wednesday when they attempted to use a fake GH�50 note to buy sachet water from a trader. The trader, who detected that the money was fake, raised an alarm, thereby attracting other traders to the scene. The suspects were subsequently arrested and handed over to the Adentan police. At a press briefing in Accra yesterday, the Adentan District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, said Sarpong and Akosah had earlier used one of the fake GH�50 notes to buy a pair of jeans from a woman at Haatso. The suspects bought the jeans at GH�8 and were given a change of GH�42. According to Mr Ahiatafu, the suspects claimed that the fake note had been given to them by a man whose name they gave only as Kofi. He said all attempts by the police to locate Kofi proved futile. In a related development, two thieves have been arrested for attempting to escape in a taxi with mobile phone rechargeable units of a vendor. The suspects � Odartey Lamptey and Lameley Otoo, both 40, � were apprehended at the Amanhie Police Toll Booth at Dodowa after their victim had called the police to alert them to the theft and the direction which the suspects were heading. At the time of the arrest, Ms Otoo had hidden the rechargeable cards in her panties. The police found GH�414 cash and more than GH�300 worth of recharge cards on the suspects.
