Speaker asks MPs to generate business

Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, Speaker has charged members of parliament (MPs) to bring business to the floor of the House for deliberation instead of waiting solely on the Executive to do so. He said while he agrees that greater part of business is from the Executive, MPs should also bring out questions, statements among other issues, in order to be seen to be discharging their duties effectively. Mr Adjaho gave the advice when he had to adjourn sitting some few minutes after the House began proceedings at 10 am because there was no government business to be discharged. Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bunso, Minority Leader expressed concern about the lack of business to be done, explaining that this leads to the saturation of the House with a lot of work when members are preparing to rise. Dr Benjamin Kunbuor, Leader of government business and member for Nandom said he had contacted the various Ministries to bring their businesses before the House. Only one paper was presented on Tuesday involving a report of the Finance Committee on the request for waiver of custom duties, value added tax, destination inspection fees, withholding taxes and other taxes and levies amounting to $7, 413, 611, 00 on goods and services relating to the executive of the grant agreement between the Japan international Cooperation Agency and the Government for the rehabilitation of the national trunk road N8.
