Appointments of Head of Security Agencies Must Be Depoliticized To Curtail Drug Trade - Kofi Jumah

Former KMA boss, Maxwell Kofi Jumah is of the opinion that security institutions are failing to function because of the politicization of the appointment of heads. He stressed that the moment politics was set in the appointment of the heads of security services in the country, the functions of the institutions were compromised; adding that institutions like BNI, EOCO, Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces are supposed to work independently devoid of political interference. In an interview with Okay FM, the former Asokwa MP said that the appointment of the heads of the various National Security services must be done by Parliament and non-partisan councils which will make sure that deserving heads are appointed to man these various security services without the involvement of the President. He further said that the appointment of the heads must be on contract basis and a stipulated time should be given to the heads; adding that in doing so will help build institutional checks and balances which will curtail the drug trade which are involved with the National Security agents. The former deputy minister for Local Government said that if things are left the way they are , then such problems like that of Solomon Adelaquaye will continue but because people want to survive, if the appointment is done by independent body there is no way the heads of the National Security services will be compromised. He suggested that the mainstream way to curtail such drug trade is to re-structure the way people are appointed to head the security services in the country; proposing that before anybody is given an appointment in the security services, the fellow must be subjected to drug test to ascertain future problems.
