Makola women declare support for Mayor

The Greater Accra Market Women Association has declared its support for Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), in his quest to develop the capital city. The Association, therefore, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to retain Dr Vanderpuije as MCE for Accra. It asked the Accra Mayor to maintain utmost vigilance and continue with the development of the metropolis since the rehabilitation of the Accra markets had become an urgent issue that needed to be addressed as early as possible. Miss Mercy Afrowa Nee-Djan, President of the Association, said this at a public forum organised by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly on Wednesday to enumerate some of its programmes for the building of modern markets in Accra, especially the Salaga and London markets. She expressed worry about the boardroom antics, particularly the determination by some people to promote distrust and remove Dr Vanderpuije from office. Miss Nee-Djan called for a stop to that and urged the market women to appraise the records of the Mayor to determine whether he needed to be changed or not. It will just be prudent for individuals or groups of persons to support someone who has practically shown that he will be able to provide the traders with amenities and infrastructure such as the reconstruction of the burnt markets to get them out poverty, she said. Miss Nee-Djan said: After all, democracy to a larger degree is entrusting power into the hands of responsible people who could ensure development, She warned politicians against divisiveness that could tear the country apart, adding; political parties will come and go but Makola market will remain forever. She urged market women in Greater Accra to rise above parochial interests and support the Accra Mayor who is capable of pursuing policies that would enhance the development of traders in region.
