MTN To Spend 1.305 Billion Dollars On Network

MTN, one of the leading mobile telecommunications giants in the country, has committed $1.305 billion to improve network quality. Mrs Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN told senior journalists in Kumasi at an Editors Forum that $1.2 billion was spent last year while another $105 million would be spent this year to upgrade, replace obsolete equipment and expand the network. These, she said are in line with the new vision to lead the delivery of a bold digital world to customers and thus create a distinct customer experience. Mrs Lumor said the fibre line would be extended by 38 kilometres whilst another stretch would be laid from Kumasi to Obuasi as a backup in August... In spite of these efforts, challenges like frequent fibre cuts, power surges, microwave failures and generator battery thefts are undermining the network optimisation drive. Network failures/congestion, and call drops that customers have been experiencing are caused by some of these challenges and we as a service provider are doing our possible best to reduce these to the barest minimum, she said. Mrs Lumor said regardless of the operational challenges, the company continues to give back to the communities through the MTN Ghana Foundation in the form of improving education, maternal health and empowerment. In the Ashanti Region, GH2.2 million has gone into social responsibilities with the construction of 20- bed Maternity Ward facility and a theatre at Ejisu and Fomena to improve maternal health in these areas. At Nkyesa near Juaso in the Asante-Akim South District a six-unit classroom block has been constructed to replace an old dilapidated one to give some comfort to the pupils. Another project is on-going at Owerriman Senior Secondary School at Domeabra in the Municipality.
