Tullow, 2 Others To Grow Golf In Ghana

Three organisations-Tullow Oil, Paul McGinley and World Governing Golf Body have girded their loins to work very hard to grow and promote golf in the country. To achieve this, the Ghana Golf Association has signed a three year-contract with golf expert, Irish Tom Kennedy, to help grow the game nationwide. Dr Felix Frempong, a board member of the Ghana Golf Association, announced this last Friday at the formal launch of the golf development project and a golf clinic for kids at the Achimota Driving Range in Accra. He noted that the programme would affect the youth, particularly in basic and second cycle institutions, across the nation. We would try and get as many schools as possible, especially those in communities, he stated. He continued Like any other sport, talent is the youth, so is all about the youth he stressed. According to him, Tullow Oil will provide support in the area of logistics such as the provision of offices, transport and accommodation. The oil firm will also bear the cost of items and equipment needed for trainees and officials of the project. Paul McGinley, a golf development officer and a European top golfer, is expected to mentor young kids and golf talents in the country, while teaching and training these kids to be top golfers at the same time. The World Golf Governing Body, which is being represented by a golf development officer, Duncan Weir, from Royal &Ancient (R&A) of Scotland, under the deal, would provide consultancy and ensure trainees acquire developmental skills of the game. The occasion was attended by the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Joseph Yammin, who pledged his outfits support for the project, while commending Tullow for their support. He reiterated the governments commitment developing all the over 36 sporting disciplines. To this end, Mr Yammin noted that the government would provide 20 multipurpose sporting facilities across the country to augment existing sporting facilities in the country.
