Education Director Unhappy With BECE Pregnancies

Mrs Kate Nutsugah-Mikado, former Girl-Child Education Director, has expressed worry about the high number of pregnancies reported among Junior High School girls, writing this years Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Mrs Nutsugah-Mikado, now the Akatsi-North District Director of Education, appealed to parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their daughters to help prevent such incidences. She was speaking to the GNA following her interaction with candidates writing the BECE in Akatsi-South and Akatsi-North Districts. Mrs Nutsugah-Mikado advised the girls to remain at home so that they could continue their education after the results saying the BECE is just the beginning of your educational career. She appealed to the candidates to abide by the rules of the six days examination and not be frightened by it adding that it was equally important for the invigilators to be vigilant but flexible. Mr James Gunu, Akatsi-North District Chief Executive (DCE), urged the candidates to calmly read through the questions before attempting them and after writing their answers they should also read through their answers thoroughly. He promised prizes for the best three students in the examinations and urged them to work hard. Of the 294 candidates for the Ave-Dakpa Centre, two girls were absent one of them said to be pregnant. At the Akatsi Centre of the three girls were absent with one also said to be pregnant. Another girl reported to be pregnant was, however, present to write the examinations at the same Centre. Candidates from 25 schools in the Akatsi-North District are taking the exams at two centres, 13 schools at Ave-Dakpa in the Akatsi North District and 12 schools at Akatsi in the Akatsi-South District.
