Tony Aidoo Tells ECG: You Have No Excuse For Failure

Former Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the Presidency has slammed the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG) for condemning a recent World Bank report which questioned the competence of the Board Members of the ECG to manage the company effectively. The World Bank in its 2013 report, stated that Ghanas energy sector is performing below expectation and called on the government to fix the problems in the sector. It noted that the frequent power outage in the country could negatively affect the economy and undermine the countrys bid to become a full-fledged middle-income country. The report which was released some few days ago said, the incompetence of the Board has resulted in the company's mediocre performance and failure to deliver quality service to Ghanaians. In response, ECG disagreed describing the report as unacceptable and an indictment on the entire nation. Public Relations Officer of the ECG, William Boateng claimed they rank second after South Africa on the continent in terms of service provision. Contributing to panel discussion on Radio Gold's Alhaji and Alhaji, Dr. Tony Aidoo said ECG should have rather welcomed the criticisms and content of the report instead of being livid. "I was sad that the public relations officer of ECG did not find the report acceptable because it only concentrated on the negative side of the operations of ECG and ignored the achievements... that is the general national attitude especially on the part of civil servants who believe that they are entitled to be praised for doing the work for which they are being paid to do and they should not be criticized for failing to do their work; this is the mediocrity that the world bank was talking about... Dr. Tony Aidoo also bemoaned claims by the ECG that they have been able to reduce the distribution losses of the company, noting that the losses should not have been incurred by the company at all. He stressed that ECG have no excuse in failing to provide Ghanaians with the necessary services that is required because even if the President leaves office, their jobs are still secured. "...you have absolutely no excuse for failure", he said
