Drivers Should Not Increase Their Fares - GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has appealed to commercial drivers not to increase transport fares, following Wednesday morning's increase in fuel prices. However they have asked that the drivers await a decision on increases after consultations with the relevant stakeholders. The call comes amidst fears by the commuting public that the fuel price increases would lead to arbitrary price hikes in transport fares. According to the Acting chairman of the Greater Accra Regional GPRTU, Robert Sarbah who spoke to Citi News he indicated that there are other components that make up the examining of transport fares and all of those components have been increased. So we are working out the percentage in connection with the other components. He added that the discussion has not come to a conclusion yet therefore the increment has been deferred until such a time we work out the appropriate percentage and then we would let the drivers know. Meanwhile, drivers in the various regions have threatened to increase their fares following the increases in petroleum products. Some of the drivers who spoke to Citi News lamented that the increase in petroleum products would not work in their favor. Government is not helping us. You increased the prices of petroleum products the first time and directed us not to increase our fares. Now you have increased the prices again and you are still saying e should not increase ours he added.
