Police Refute GII Report

The police Administration has refuted a report by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) that the police Service is the most corrupt institution. A press statement signed by the Director of Police Public Affairs Directorate, DSP Cephas Arthur, said the 2012 report of the GII did not reflect the reality on the ground. The statement said: The attitudes of a few personnel cannot be used to obligate the integrity of the entire institution, adding that confidence in the Service these days is at an all-time high, due to the Services steady rise in professionalism. It explained that the Police Administration had put measures in place to stem the problem of unprofessionalism occasionally exhibited by some personnel. Some of the measures the statement highlighted are the installation surveillance cameras at duty points on the high ways and in the cities to check extortion by personnel of the Service, the engagement of private investigative teams who partner police to monitor personnel compliance with professional standards, and the continues training and sensational of personnel on the Police Code of Ethics Handbook, to guide them in the performance of their duties. According to the statements, over the past couple of years, from 2011 to June 2013, various disciplinary actions had been taken against some personnel of the Service for their involvement in various acts of misconduct. In the continuous efforts of the Police Administration to bring the Service to the level of International best practices, we are inviting stakeholders, including the GII, to continue to partner us to weed out unethical behaviours from the Service. It is the belief of the Police Administration that these measures have impacted positively to enhance professional practices, the statement said.
