37 Station Drivers Defy Order Not To Increase Fares

Drivers of the 37 main lorry station have indicated that irrespective of the directive by the transport operators for drivers not to increase fares, they (drivers) will go ahead with their own calculations and increase fares. According to them, the 1.71 per cent increase in premium prices and 6.18 per cent increase in diesel prices will have significant effect on their daily sales. Speaking to TV3s Kweku Temeng on Thursday, the drivers said they have agreed to inch the fares up by GHp 20. Their action was condemned by the local Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) Welfare Chairman, Kweku Frempong, who described it as a sign of indiscipline. He, however, indicated that he will persuade the drivers from increasing the fares as they wait for directive from the national headquarters. The GPRTU and the Ghana Roads Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on Wednesday directed drivers and owners of commercial vehicles to delay any adjustments they might want to make to fares. They indicated that they will come out with realistic transport fares very soon.
